Since the introduction of the Honda Insight in 1999, closely followed by the Toyota Prius, the UK has been the tenth largest consumer of Hybrid vehicles. The hybrid is a vehicle powered by a combination of power sources, normally a petrol internal combustion engine (I.C.) and stored electricity.
The I.C. engine provides the power to produce electricity which is then stored on board the vehicle in a battery pack. This electric energy is used to turn a near silent and non-polluting electric motor. Around town the vehicle can work solely on electricity for 50-70 miles, without using any fossil fuel. When the charge gets low it can either be 'plugged-in' or the petrol engine can start automatically. Out on the road at slow speed (generally below 30mph) the battery provides all power, any higher and the engine starts and provides extra amps so the vehicle can continue to cruise tirelessly, just like a diesel but cleaner and oh so much cheaper....
We are keen to point out that all the current Hybrid vehicles are Exempt of the London Congestion charge. The Toyota Estima Hybrid, the same body as the UK Toyota Previa, is available from 2001 as a 4x4 people carrier. Also the hybrid Lexus "GX300h" is an high specification SUV 4x4 hybrid or "kid carrier" low carbon vehicle for towing. They make excellent sense for commercial activities as the £8 per day adds up to over £2000 per annum if running into the Congestion Zone. In 2008 the charge is likely to be increased to a tenner a day.
We currently have a technician trained to work on the 2003 model "Prius", later this year their training will include the new 2006 Honda "IMA" Civic models. At our disposal we have a contractor that is fully conversant in the earlier Honda models of "Insight"s and "IMA" systems
