What are the Aussies saying about the forth coming petrol Dispatch version suitable for gaseous fuel LPG conversion

CITROEN is planning an assault on the local van market with two new models.

A diesel version of the popular Berlingo small van is sure to increase its appeal, and a new one-tonne van gives owners the chance to upsize with the French brand.

The Berlingo has been a popular small van since its introduction in 1999.

But increased competition from rivals with diesel engines and automatic transmission has restricted its growth.

VW has won a large following with its diesel-powered Caddy van, which also has an automated manual gearbox.

It's now the top-selling small van, though it comes at a hefty price premium over rivals such as the Berlingo.

Citroen's Miles Williams has been watching the progress of the diesel Caddy and the Renault Kangoo, which has the option of an automatic transmission, and has been lobbying the French carmaker to supply him with the diesel variant of the Berlingo.

Like all models in the portfolio of Ateco, the Citroen importer, the final outcome will depend on the pricing that Williams can negotiate with Citroen's head office.

The negotiations are still in progress, but took a step forward at a meeting in Sydney last week between Williams and visiting Citroen staff.

Williams is now confident a deal can be reached that would see the diesel Berlingo being produced for Australia, arriving late this year or early next.

"As long as the price differential between the petrol van and the diesel variant isn't $5000 or something ridiculous, I think we can come to a deal," Williams says.

The Berlingo is sold here with a 1.4-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine, but should Williams be successful in his bid for a diesel, it would also be offered with a 1.9-litre engine that puts out 51kW and 125Nm.

There is no chance Williams will get his wish for an automatic transmission -- there simply isn't one in the Berlingo catalogue.

"We would love to have one," he says.

"Small vans like the Berlingo are bought by businesses who often employ women not licensed to drive a manual, so we do lose some business to the Renault Kangoo.

"But Citroen doesn't make an auto in the Berlingo and they have no demand for it in Europe so we know of no plans to build one."

Williams is also confident he can mount a strong business case for the medium-size Dispatch van.

T HE Dispatch one-tonner would compete with the VW T5 Transporter, Mercedes-Benz Vito, Ford Transit and Toyota HiAce, but Williams believes it would appeal to Citroen buyers who want a larger van than the Berlingo.

"We think there is a natural demand for the Dispatch from customers who now run the Berlingo, but want a larger van," he says.

"That volume alone, we believe, would get us near our sales target,"

Though confident the Dispatch would pay its way, he says it's early in the negotiations with head office.

"We're hopeful, but we haven't got down to pricing yet.

"We need to give Citroen a proposal saying where we think the car sits and giving some target pricing.

"Once we've done that we'll have a discussion on whether that works."

Williams says that should the discussions prove successful he would import 1.0-tonne and 1.2-tonne variants of the Dispatch, along with a people mover.

All would be diesel-powered, except one

Williams says he's about 70 per cent confident that the Dispatch will come here.

If it does it will arrive early next year.
